Local Government Twitter Awareness Day

What has 310 million users? I’ll give you a clue; it’s not Facebook… Need another? 500 million* tweets are sent a year… That’s right, it’s Twitter! Twitter wasn’t the overnight success that Facebook was, it started off more slowly, and in recent times has become the go to platform for customers posting feedback on company websites – social media ensures a faster response time.

But why am I telling you this, you ask. Well today marks Local Government Twitter Day. The aim of the day is to showcase the diverse range of council services within the Twitter community and to increase awareness of the important work that local government does.

The day will be led by a coalition of every local government peak body in Australia, as well as ALGA, the national peak body. In 2017, they will again seek the participation of councils that already have a Twitter account by using a common hashtag to group Twitter feeds nationally on the day.

The 2017 Local Government Twitter Day is: Tuesday, 1 August 2017

The hashtag to be used on the day is: #yourratesatwork

In a world of blogs, updates and tweets, what benefit and differentiator does Twitter offer?

  1. Everyone else is doing it
  • Maybe not the best reason, but do you want to be the business that customers can’t engage with easily…?
  1. It’s good optics
  • As the saying goes, a picture paints a 1000 words. Show off your swimming pool in the summer and the unique beauty of your shire and your staff!
  1. Fast way to get the message out
  • Good examples of this include the east coast residents of America learning of tremors in Washington DC before they hit. There were also the October 2013 bushfires in NSW which saw 18,300 retweets of the NSW RFS tweets.
  1. Great networking tool
  • Follow your peers and companies that you would like to do business with
  1. Lets you engage with your customers
  • Community events, company updates

So if you haven’t jumped on the # bandwagon, maybe have a look at #yourratesatwork and join the #revolution.
